Concerns about units in Chinese

Description

Since the survey tool is closed, I post my concern here. Maybe it could be discussed later.

I notice that all the units are translated into Chinese characters in long, short and narrow forms. However, in lots of cases, units are displayed in latin letters instead of Chinese characters in mainland China, and this is permitted by GB3100.

For example,

On traffic signs, we use km or m instead of 千米(kilometer) or 米(meter).
On the boxes of bulbs, the power is indicated by W instead of 瓦特(watt).
On the plates of a high-voltage power line, the voltage is more often indicated by kV.
On boxes/bottles/bags of food or medicine, both g, ml and the Chinese character equivalence 克, 毫升 can be found.
On the measuring tools like multimeters or graduates, we use latin letters.

The only case that Chinese characters must be used is duration.

Therefore, it might be better to use latin letters as in English for the narrow-other in Chinese, without translation. Especially for lengths, as it is odd if the map apps tells me to turn in xxx 米 instead of xxx m.

The disadvantage is for most of the units, the English locale only has 2 forms, long and short, but the Chinese locale wants 3, long, short and narrow. Like

& English & Chinese

long-display & volts & 伏特
long-other & {0} volts & {0}伏特
short-display & volts & 伏
short-other & {0} V & {0}
narrow-display & volts & 伏
narrow-other & {0} V & {0} V

It is not a big difference and I am OK if no change is taken. But I just want to mention that localization doesn't mean to translate everything into the target language.

Most contributors only cover the Modern level.
This means that narrow-Display and narrow-other do not get covered by most contributors.
