Description (last modified by markus) (diff)

The translation "吉字节" (GB), "兆字节" (MB) is not commonly used in China. The non localized version, i.e. GB, MB, is more commonly used.

  • Data Locale changed from zh-CN to zh-CN ar fa ka
  • Summary changed from Short form of Storage Units (MB,GB) are over translated in zh-CN to Short form of Storage Units (MB,GB) are over translated in zh-CN, ar, fa and ka

Short-other entries for TB,GB,MB, etc are definitely wrong.

Long-other and displayNames are less clear-cut.

Arabic, Persian and Georgian locales have a similar issue.

This bug needs to be fixed in the Survey tool. You should work with Kristi and other PMs to make sure that the translation guidelines call this issue out to all vetters.

This is the new process, so the reviewer needs to check check that the items are done in the survey tool (and nudge people towards the end of submission if not!)

I can confirm that this is not over translated in Georgian (KA) and localized versions should be used for MB, GB, TB, etc.

While KA does not regularly distinguish between lower and uppercase, the common practice is to write 'mbit' (მბიტი) for mb and 'mbyte' (მბაიტი) for MB.

The approach has been used for years in all major localization projects and approved glossaries.

In Arabic, I think we can just say “ك.بايت/م.بايت/ج.بايت/ت.بايت”. This is the shortest understandable form.
Same goes for “bit” forms.

Chiara, do you know if this change will make it to CLDR 34?

Our in-house zh_Hans linguist agrees this should be reverted to English.
