470,000 (2012 T. Salminen). Ethnic population: 548,000 (2010 census). Total users in all countries: 482,000.
Note that currently Mari is marked with chm which is a code for the macro language. There are two written standards, which need to be dealt with as two separate language codes (think how Norwegian Nynorsk and Norwegian Bokmål are treated. The two individual codes are mhr (Meadow Mari) and myv (Hill Mari).
However unlike Norwegian (no == nb), the macro code chm should not redirect to either of the languages.
