CLDR Ticket #11083(closed: fixed)

en: Swaziland has changed their name to eSwatini

Reported by: fredrik Owned by: pedberg
Component: locale-codes-names Data Locale:
Phase: dsub Review: mark
Weeks: Data Xpath:

The king of Swaziland declared on the 50th anniversary that the country should be known as eSwatini (unsure if capitalization should remain in sentence starts)

Official website: http://www.gov.sz

But the tourist board's site, that is linked from the Government site, still uses "Swaziland": http://www.thekingdomofswaziland.com

For TC to consider whether the English name should be changed. Perhaps not "common usage" just yet.

First mention of the name in MSM I've seen that's not related to the name change itself: https://www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2018/12/02/670006163/how-10-orphans-from-eswatini-helped-write-a-prize-winning-movie

Just checked in changes for the out-of-date locales on this ticket. Peter should take a look at those as part of the review.

Thanks. r14723 looks good, just one nit and a question.

  1. In SubmissionLocales.java there is this comment:
    //ldml/dates/timeZoneNames/zone[@type="Asia/Macau"]/exemplarCity, old: Macau, new: Macao
    but actually the old was "Asia/Macao" (yes, the old display name had "Asia/" but used the -o spelling).
  2. Should we add a BRS task or other reminder to update ICU_Locales[] (ShowLocaleCoverage.java) for every release?

The English change for Eswatini looks fine, but I don't have know-how to review the other changes. Changing reviewer to Mark.
