Following the new name in ISO amendment, the native currency name would be
bolívar soberano

  1. The name in es_VE.xml does not look right.

It is currently:

<displayName>bolívar soberano venezolano</displayName>

Should be "bolívar soberano"

  1. The name in en.xml is not what we discussed.

it is currently: <displayName>Venezuelan Bolívar</displayName>

should be: "Bolívar". The name in the ISO amendment is "Bolívar Soberano", but the TC discussion was to just use "Bolívar"

  1. Currency symbol for VES is "Bs.S". We should add this at least for es_VE.xml

Replying to kristi:

  1. The name in es_VE.xml does not look right.

It is currently:

<displayName>bolívar soberano venezolano</displayName>

Should be "bolívar soberano"

JCE: Since the locale is known as es_VE, I can live with venezolano not being there. In any other locale, I would want it ( or it's localized equivalent ) to be there.. See next item.

  1. The name in en.xml is not what we discussed.

it is currently: <displayName>Venezuelan Bolívar</displayName>

should be: "Bolívar". The name in the ISO amendment is "Bolívar Soberano", but the TC discussion was to just use "Bolívar"

JCE: I disagree. For an English speaker, just "Bolívar" isn't enough here. Unless you know that this currency belongs with Venezuela, it causes much confusion. We used to do it this way, and it was a really BAD idea. We aren't required to match the ISO amendment name exactly, but rather give people a string that is actually going to be useful.

  1. Currency symbol for VES is "Bs.S". We should add this at least for es_VE.xml

JCE: I wasn't able to find any documentation to validate that "Bs.S" would be the new currency symbol, but I will trust you on this one, as it makes perfect sense. I will put in a change for that one.

Reviewing in smoketest.

Not a showstopper for submission, but incomplete.

What I see there is:

VES marked as (OLD) and no currency code showing.
http://cldr-smoke.unicode.org/smoketest/v#/de/C_SAmerica/1fc1d6845d2b7bd8

VEF is unmarked (eg current)
http://cldr-smoke.unicode.org/smoketest/v#/de/C_SAmerica/68110bf9e61f5b6

Now, the OLD/plain change is because (I think) the switch doesn't happen yet. If it is not an easy fix, we can just alert vetters to it. The missing code is probably one of step for changing a currency being missing.

I missed the comment higher up in the spreadsheet that "Verify both VEF and VES in modern coverage (for now) old currency isn't retired yet. VES will show as "(old)" in the header until after June 4, when the new currency takes effect." Captured that in the Known Issues.

However, it is still odd that the currency code is not showing up under VES-symbol.
