E-Mail Alerts from CLDR

Reported by: Marcel Schneider <charupdate@…> Owned by: anybody
Component: unknown Data Locale:
Phase: dsub Review:
Weeks: Data Xpath:

Every time I post to the forum or to a ticket, I get an e-mail alert with practically indistinctive sender. So my Unicode folder is so full of alerts I don’t see the relevant ones, i.e. when somebody else posts to the forum or an action or comment to a ticket I opened. E.g. when Doug Ewell or Philippe Verdy responded on a ticket or in a thread I repeatedly wasn’t aware, as I was busy submitting data and posting to the forum (typically through a ST item side pane showing the related thread if any), and tired of getting echoed in my mailbox what I already knew for having posted it myself.

A) Would it be possible please to disable redundant and almost useless self-alerts?

B) Alternately, would it be possible please to add the Original Sender like on the Unicode Mailing Lists? Then I would see e.g. "Doug Ewell via CLDR Trac", or "Philippe Verdy via CLDR ST".

Please note, too, that I’ve added "Trac" to what actually comes in as just from "CLDR". And with respect to the increased length, I’ve abbreviated "Survey Tool" to "ST".

Thanks for fixing this on ST. I’m noticing that I get no more self-alerts from the forum. Hopefully I still get those from other submitters.

All e-mail alerts disabled

It came up that other contributors don’t get any e-mail alert any more. Not only do I get no alert when other people post to the forum, but nobody gets any alert since that point.

That is highly inconvenient, and leads to duplicate and redundant messaging.

Request for e-mail alerts to be enabled

Please turn on e-mail alerts again for all users.

The final vetting phase has been disturbed due to ST not sending any e-mail alerts.

Please do not make changes to settings without informing all impacted submitters and gathering feedback whether they agree, or not.

The discussed behavior of the mail server was accidental, see ticket:11293.

The requested changes are mirrored in ticket:11293#comment:4.

Moving ticket:11293#comment:4 here, as ticket:11293 about an e-mail bug was fixed and closed.

Suggested changes to e-mail settings

  • A person posting to a forum shall not get alerts about his or her posts. The reason is that forum posts are numerous by nature and may be redundant, as each problematic item is expected to have a forum thread showing up in the information panel, so when there are several items with same issue, as many threads should be launched as there are items to change.
  • The alerts from the bug tracker shall contain the sender’s identification in the From field like on Unicode mailing lists. The reason is that self-alerts may be tolerated, given bug comments are fewer and non-redundant (tickets may be xrefed), but a person posting on Trac shall be able to disregard self-alerts.
