Potentially wrong language code

Reported by: lorna_priest@… Owned by: rick
Component: main Data Locale:
Phase: Review: pedberg
Weeks: Data Xpath:
Xref:

Description

In the supplemental data file we have this:
<language type="ril" scripts="Beng"/>

I think this is probably wrong. "ril" is Riang spoken in Myanmar and China (http://www.ethnologue.com/show_language.asp?code=ril). Bengali script is not normally used in either of those countries.

"ria" is Riang spoken in India and Bangladesh (http://www.ethnologue.com/show_language.asp?code=ria) Bengali script is often used in India and Bangladesh.

I think the Ethnologue information is probably wrong too. I suspect the Ethnologue got data from CLDR or CLDR got it from Ethnologue.

This may need further investigation. And Ethnologue should never get data from CLDR. CLDR language/pop/script data is all secondary source, not primary research.

  • Review set to pedberg

Lorna Priest reported back, as follows:

I have found out that
-the script for Riang [ril] is Latin script. As far as I can tell, Bengali was never used. ril is spoken in Myanmar and China where there is not historical use of Bengali.
-the *primary* script for [ria] is Latin script, but there may be some use of Bengali. ria is spoken primarily in India with a tiny population in Bangladesh where there may have been use of Bengali script.
My recommendation is to delete the record completely.

I have deleted the line for "ril" from language_script_raw.txt.
