Suggestion: Consider using “klo” or “kello” in Finnish date time formats

Reported by: lasse.liehu@… Owned by: pedberg
Component: other Data Locale: fi
Phase: rc Review: fredrik
Weeks: Data Xpath:
Xref:

Description

Currently all dateTimeFormat patterns in fi are of form “{1} {0}”. This results in the following formats:

  • short: 14.9.1999 13.25
  • medium: 14.9.1999 13.25.59
  • long: 14. syyskuuta 1999 13.25.59 UTC-5
  • full: tiistai 14. syyskuuta 1999 13.25.59 Yhdysvaltain itäinen normaaliaika

I’m suggesting to add “klo” to medium (and perhaps short) and “kello” to long and full formats, like “{1} klo {0}” and “{1} kello {0}”. I’m no expert, but I think that this would be customary usage and also make the strings clearer.

For those readers that don’t know Finnish, “kello”, literally “clock”, is used to mean “at” in times and “klo” is an abbreviation of that.

Feedback from our Finnish translators:

We don't oppose the suggestion. Adding "klo" to the patterns would make them look less heavy to read and easier to comprehend. It would work as a comma. I would, however, only use "klo" because this is what is normally used in such patterns. It's also shorter and everyone will understand it in the context.

FYI - The "klo" here should have been put in single quotes, otherwise ICU things that the k, l, and o, and pattern characters.

Yes of course, I don't know what I was thinking (I should know better), sorry about that. I see you fixed it with r11333, thanks...
