Description

In user interfaces that allow selection of a region from among lists grouped hierarchically e.g. by continent (see attached screenshot), it is often useful to have a region show up in multiple categories; it may be a country that is actually in two continents (Turkey or Russia), or is often logically grouped with countries in a different continent (e.g. Egypt with middle eastern countries, or all EU countries under Europe). To facilitate this it would help to have data that provides an additional grouping value beyond the standard UN M49 grouping, for example (alternate groupings used by OS X Language & Preferences pane):

country UN M49 alternate
code grouping grouping

AM Armenia 145 W Asia 039 S Europe (or 151 E Europe?)
CY Cyprus 145 W Asia 039 S Europe (or 151 E Europe?)
EG Egypt 015 N Africa 145 W Asia
GE Georgia 145 W Asia 039 S Europe (or 151 E Europe?)
RU Russia 151 E Europe 143 Central Asia
TR Turkey 145 W Asia 039 S Europe (or 151 E Europe?)
