Add language to Serbia(RS), Rusyn

Reported by: millosh@… Owned by: rick

Description

Rusyn is one of the minority languages of Serbia. You could see, for example, the article on Wikipedia [1].

You could see that Rusyn is the official language of Autonomous Province Vojvodina [2] (though, they are using the code "UK"). You could also see the site of the National Council of the Rusyn National Minority [3].

More information is needed on the actual user population, with reliable source for the statistics. Please provide a specific population number or percentage that is proposed to be added to CLDR. The figure would be for the number (or country population percentage) who would use this language for reading/writing/UI on computers. Or a population figure with estimate of literacy percentage in the language.

  • Rusyns in Serbia: 14246 (1)
  • Speakers of Rusyn in Serbia: 11340 (2)

Both documents are in Serbian, but there is also the English name "Ruthenians / Ruthenian". It's the publication of the Statistical agency of Serbia. (Links intentionally scrambled because of the anti-spam software.)

However, it seems that Rusyn language of Serbia (Srem-Backa Rusyn) is distant enough from the Carpathian Rusyn, that it requires to be added into ISO 639-3. (We'll likely start the procedure in a couple of months.)

What are the ISO language codes being requested for addition? If/when you have an update, please go ahead and add info here.

We haven't yet started the procedure. It's likely that we'll do it in a couple of months. While addressing the previous request, I've realized that ordinary Rusyn from Serbia is not able to understand Carpathian Rusyn and that their schoolbooks are written in a language different from it.

Please review guidelines for additions/updates to language/population data, and you may re-open this bug with relevant details (if applicable).

I can't quite figure out what is really being requested in this bug, due to the additional comments.
