At the beginning of his career, Ian worked in the printing industry as a compositor and keyboard operator on hot-metal typesetters. In 1974, he joined Monotype as phototypesetting instructor. Later on, he became involved in the development of non-Latin capabilities on Monotype's Lasercomp Imagesetter, particularly for the Arabic, Urdu, and Indic languages. Since 1990, Ian has concentrated on the support of the non-Latin font library at Monotype Typography, and from around 1995 has been involved in its transition to Unicode. In the early 1990s, he single-handedly produced a comprehensive catalogue of Monotype's non-Latin typefaces. Based in Surrey, England, Ian is the main contact at Monotype UK for Unicode and non-Latin issues. |
