Don't replace the vertical bar without also changing ASCII to
ESCII. If you define a new charset ESCII and use it instead
of US-ASCII, then you can change your default charset, and
at least there will be some hope of avoiding disaster.
I'm afraid that it will be necessary to explain to people *why*
otherwise attempting to *redefine* an *existing* character in a
character set is different than *defining* a new set which
bears a strong resemblance to the old.
