ITU/T also calls it "octothorpe"... I once looked in my complete edition of
the OED and I never found it. "Thorpe", to which "octo" ("8-") applies,
meant field, or village, if my memory is good, so "8-fields around a
village plaza" (a village surrounded by 8 fields) is my interpretation. (;
