This was the only way of emphazising in Fraktur script (black letter, Gothic
type).
Even after the official ban of the Fraktur (in 1942), speced typing was
common in some circels (particularly amongst lawyers), with fixed-pitch
typewriters. It is virtually never used with proportional fonts, in modern
text processing.
