Ideographic description characters?

Can someone please tell me what the characters in the Ideographic
description characters block are used for? Is U+2FF0 U+5973 (女) U+5B50 (子)
identical to U+597D (好), or do these character serve for a completely
different purpose? Does any font support the characters in this block?
