HR> note that Cyrillic no longer has official status in Azerbaijan
HR> (unlike Yugoslavia, where both are official).
Oh, people are still happily using Cyrillic... in the larger cities,
most signs are in Latin now after a presidential decree late last
year, but in the countryside a lot is still Cyrillic, and if you ask
people to write down their names, most will still use Cyrillic.
The switch had some really interesting effects. Because the gist of
the decree was that Cyrillic was to vanish completely, some people
even changed Russian text to Latin alphabet with Azeri Turkish
orthography. Today in Baku, there is quite a number of shops with
signs such as "remont çasov" ("clock repairs").
