Similarly, in pinyin transliteration of Chinese, the apostrophe (and this really is an apostrophe)
is used to divide syllables that may otherwise be incorrectly interpretted.

Thus Yan'an 延安 and Yanan 崖南; Xi'an 西安 and xian 仙.
