There were recently threads concerning the display of variant glyphs.
Here's an interesting approach...

This is from the "Aboriginal Serif Unicode" font developer's web site, which
is offered as a "Unicode" font to cover U.C.A.S..

Here is a page which offers some examples of syllabics for a few languages
using this approach.

Hmmm, it seems that in order to display this page as its author intended,
one would have to install the font...
