I know that you were (are?) thinking only of the early history. What I
was trying to tell you is that there are places where that symbol is in
current use. (Just google "Christian fish" and go a dozen links below
the encyclopedias to find examples, even news stories that refer to
current practices).
The ads I was talking about are not for fish stores, but for businesses
that are owned or operated by people who use the symbol to indicate
their faith and / or that they are targeting particular communities
(presumably of believers, at least those that believe in the virtue of
patronizing stores that profess whatever they do by advertising with the
fish).
I'd love to cite some examples, but even though I know of some
businesses that use the fish in that way, they apparently do not
maintain a web-presence that I could cite with a quick link.
