Hi all,

Is Egyptian Demotic on somebody's roadmap for Unicode?

Apparently not :

• The script encoding initiative list it with no proposal and no contact here http://www.linguistics.berkeley.edu/sei/alpha-script-list.html
• The only references to demotic I found in the proposals where about meroitic cursive, coptic letters of demotic origin and characters for translitteration into latin
• It is not on the SMP roadmap http://www.unicode.org/roadmaps/smp/

A similar question was asked on this list in 2006 and Serge Rosmorduc explained why such an encoding would be tricky http://www.unicode.org/mail-arch/unicode-ml/y2006-m05/0158.html . In a few words the problem would be :

• Difficulty to establish the glyph/character/ligature separation
• Small community of users (100 or 200 demoticists)

I would add that, according to my understanding, the encoding of hieroglyphs is far from achieved and is probably a higher priority for egyptologists.
