That would be a bit like our forebears having said, “It’s ridiculous to call them ‘tomatoes’ outside Mexico. They’re just big berries, and that’s it.” That observation may have been true, but also beside the point if, in practice, the Europeans found it convenient and chose to call them ‘tomatoes’.
