When used as an 8-bit code, it allows the English and one Indian script alphabet to be used simultaneously. It includes a mechanism to change the character shapes (glyphs) to those corresponding to one Indian script alphabet versus another, e.g., Devanagari versus Bengali. The character set covers the following Indian script alphabets: Assamese, Bengali, Devanagari, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Oriya, Punjabi, Tamil, and Telugu.
