Indic Script Policy & Planning in the Digital Age
Language policy in India, drafted at the state level for “regional” languages, has long attempted to define how scripts and technology interface. The spread of typewriters in India brought about a wave of standardization efforts. Policy level response to digital fonts and encoding however, has been slower. How do government bodies, designers, and native speakers navigate these conflicting claims on language representation?
I hope to bring more attention to the end users of Indic language fonts and IMEs, and learn how their user preferences can be incorporated into policy and design.
