Character to Glyph: How Unicode® Text Makes it to Your Screen
I will discuss and illustrate several concepts around how fonts are part of higher-level protocols to bring Unicode® text to your screen. This will include: making a clear distinction between characters vs glyphs, some gory details of font innards, and an overview of how fonts work in text layout engines to deliver a visual depiction of text. I hope attendees will gain a better understanding of the importance and limitations of fonts in the scheme of Unicode text.
