Lessons Launching Dozens of New Languages in a UI
In the years 2021 to 2023 Facebook added 35 new professionally supported languages (from Kazakh to Haitian Creole) – scaling an established application to so many new languages requires prioritizing the right content and making linguistic compromises to reconcile business needs and the user experience. Scaling the system we had to align documentation, protocol, tooling and automation to get the mission done. This can will be a model in how other internet apps can approach language support for emergent online communities.
