Unicode Source Code Handling

This talk will give an quick overview of the usability and security issues that can arise in Unicode source code, and how these are mitigated by the recommendations published in Unicode Version 15.1 and Unicode Technical Standard #55 Version 1.

It will also outline the process leading to the publication of a new standard in record time, from exchanges on Twitter at 3 in the morning in November 2021 to final publication in September 2023, through the formation of a new kind of working group in February 2022, first changes to the Standard in September 2022, publication of a proposed draft in November 2022, and the establishment of a liaison relationship with the ISO subcommittee for programming language standardization.

Like Unicode Technical Standard #55 itself, this talk would be relevant to programming language designers and programming environment developers; the process aspects are more broadly relevant to standardizers in general, and especially those involved in Unicode processes, such as the members of the new working group on terminals.

It may also be an opportunity to gauge interest in work on improving the underlying UTS #39 confusables data and data model, which is subpar for many complex scripts.
