In the presence of smart font technologies, which I hope will
be ubiquitous sooner than later, it is not necessary to use
precomposed characters in order to select precomposed glyphs;
the two are apples and oranges. (You may have other reasons for
wanting to use precomposed characters, but that's a separate
issue from rendering.)
