        Wrong. ASCII is 7 bit, UTF-8 is 8 bit. UTF-8 works properly in 8
bit clean environments. Since networks carry information almost exclusively
in 8 bit units, UTF-16 and UTF-32 work just as well. UTF-8 does have the
not-negligible advantage that its 7-bit clean component is ASCII.

        This whole thread is silly, really. The reasons for the encodings
are as much political and historic as they are technical. Welcome to life.
Yes, everything would be nicer if we all just threw out everything and
adopted the One True Solution. Easier for you, not us, and so we ain't
gonna!
