Subject: No proper representation of Devnagari in Unicode
Hi Everybody
The Unicode character set in it's current form does not support Devnagari
well.It has no half characters for the Devnagari script.
It is just like not having e a d f in the roman(latin) script.
This particular aspect renders it useless to be used by anyone including
programmers.
The Devnagari script is used to write the third most spoken language of the
world - Hindi (spoken by people in almost 10 countries) and a long list of
other languages-
Sindhi , Pahari , Dogri, Nepali , Sanskrit , Rajasthani , Gharwali ,
Maithili, Bhojpuri , Marathi , Konkani , Bodo , Ho , Santhali and sometimes
even Punjabi , Urdu , Kashmiri and Tibetan.
Although the complete Devnagari is available for the Windows font as True
Type Font in just the no. of keys on a QWERTY keyboard.Hindi(Devnagari) has
it's own typewriter with just the same no. of keys as in a standard English
typewriter.
The font is also availalable for MacOS , Unix , Xenix and Linux.
The best Devnagari font available in it's full useable form is the Shusha
font from http://www.bharatbhasha.org <http://www.bharatbhasha.org> .Please
check it out form this site.
Then why is it that the Unicode committee could not incorporate all the half
characters? Instead they incorporated full characters which are seldom used
by the users of the various languages that are written in Devnagari . What
they could have done is provided half characters in place of the full ones
and just provided a DANDA to make them into full ones as and when needed.
Can somebody help me out.
I just do not seem to understand what to do about it as the Devnagari
representation in it's present form is absolutely useless for anybody
throughout the world.
With Regards
Arjun Aggarwal
