I agree. Until now, there were two families of Windows:
DOS based family:
Windows 3.11, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME
NT based, true operating system:
Windows NT 3.xx, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP
Windows ME is a dead end of the 'old' line of Windows.
Windows XP Home Edition has nothing in common with Windows ME. Well, at
least no more than any other XP product. It is a stripped-down version of
Windows XP Professional, tuned for personal use at home (or on a laptop).
So, it is not a successor of Windows ME, it is only taking its role.
The confusion is understandable because the families overlap in many ways.
For example - naming convention (in Windows 2000, NT was dropped from the
name, though it still says 'NT based' on the logon screen). Then, user
interface was being developed in both (95 had a 'new' look first, and the
look and feel was later adopted by NT 4.0).
I believe that many developers (like myself) are looking forward to seeing
98 and ME gone, for many reasons. And I think the home users who never
experienced anything other than 95 and 98 will (for the first time) notice a
major improvement in stability when they upgrade to Windows XP Home Edition.
I am sorry if this last part sounded like a Microsoft commercial. It is just
that I am really happy to see the old DOS based line will finally die.
