I don't know what those digits are, except that maybe you are referring to
the Arabic language digits or old European digits.
You can find the Arabic language digits in Unicode, near the Arabic
language letters.
The old European digits are not separate characters. I asked about this and
I was told that the old European form for the digit 5 would be classified
under the modern digit 5.
I have no idea why the digits changed form. Perhaps it was so that the
shapes would fit better with the Latin alphabet shapes. Personally, I think
they fit better with Japanese hiragana letters than with anything else.
