You use full consonant plus virama (094D;DEVANAGARI SIGN VIRAMA) to
get a half consonant or ligature. PATNI will be spelled

   PA + TA + virama + NA + vowel sign long I

Anusvara is NOT a "half m" but an independent modifier sign
(0902;DEVANAGARI SIGN ANUSVARA). HAMSA is spelled

   HA + anusvara + SA
