ISO 3166 (3-letter identifiers for countries) is one of the standards
related to the so-called "internationaliz|sation" ("i18n") and, thus, it is
a very very very very distant cousin of Unicode/ISO 10646. It is in fact
referenced on the "Useful Resources" page of the Unicode site
(http://www.unicode.org/unicode/onlinedat/resources.html).
What beats me, is how this discussion mutated to Canadian ethnology!
The issue of initials is also vaguely related to i18n: it is one of the many
cases in which data may be presented in different ways according to the
language or locale.
