That's not surprising. To the untrained eye, U+017F LATIN SMALL LETTER
LONG S looks just like LATIN SMALL LETTER F with a chip knocked off.

Some of the Cyrillic letters that were deprecated in the early 20th
Century looked quite similar to other, not necessarily related, letters.
BIG YUS, LITTLE YUS and PALOCHKA come to mind.
