    What you deem a “V” in <http://www.apilch.2in.de/briefmark17.htm>
    is clearly a LATIN CAPITAL LETTER U (a transcript of the stamp’s
    title is given on the right of that WWW page).

    There are fonts whose U looks like a modern V -- and vice versa,
    e. g., <http://www.schloesser-magazin.de/de/objekte/re/re_muensterb.php>:
    the second line reads “solvere vincula corporis”.
