226 Deprecation of kCompatibilityVariant in the Unihan database 2012.07.23
Status: Closed
Originator: UTC
Informal Discussion: Unicode Mail List (Join)
Formal Feedback: Contact Form
Resolution: The kCompatibilityVariant property will be deprecated, and associated data removed from the Unihan database, for Unicode 6.2.1. On 2013-01-29, the UTC reversed the decision to deprecate this property, and it has been re-instated for Unicode  6.3. UTC reference 134-C12. It will be documented as a derived property.

Description of Issue:

The Unicode Technical Committee is considering deprecation of the kCompatibilityVariant field in the Unihan database. It is also considering whether to remove the associated data in the Unihan database, if this field is deprecated.

Although kCompatibilityVariant defines a Normative property, its status simply reflects the fact that kCompatibilityVariant defines a subset of the kDecompositionMapping property values, which are normative. The kCompatibilityVariant field values are not separately required for conformant implementations of the Unicode Standard, but simply represent a duplication of data. This overlap of data increases the opportunity for confusion or inconsistency in data values.
