Attachment 1: Germany

With reference to your document ISO/IEC JTC1/SC2 N 3003, LB on ISO/IEC 10646-1/PDAM 22

Germany votes as follows:

Position of the German National Body (DIN) on the proposal to include in the UCS a number of graphic symbols, mainly from ISO/IEC 9995-7 but also from other sources.

Position:
The German National Body disapproves the proposal.

Justification:
The German Member Body objects to the inclusion of the symbol proposed to be coded in hex F8 of row 25 of table 46 on page 107. The symbol is intended to represent the decimal separator on the relevant key of a keyboard replacing the graphic character 'period' as used in the USA for example, or the graphic character 'comma', used in practically all countries
in Europe. To ensure general acceptance of the symbol it has to be as neutral and as independent as possible of the different customs in the world. Proposed was therefore an equiangular triangle.

The symbol now proposed for inclusion in ISO/IEC 10646 is not acceptable especially not in the USA, as its shape resembles too much that of a comma.

Attachment 2: Ireland

Q.1 Yes, Ireland approves the PDAM registration.

Q.2 Ireland approves the draft as presented, with the technical comment that the names of the following characters should be changed to reflect the use of the characters:

21F1 BEGIN SYMBOL
21F2 END SYMBOL
2380 INSERTION SYMBOL
2381 CONTINUOUS UNDERLINE SYMBOL
2382 DISCONTINUOUS UNDERLINE SYMBOL
2383 EMPHASIS SYMBOL
2384 COMPOSITION SYMBOL
2385 CENTRE SYMBOL
2386 ENTER SYMBOL
2387 ALTERNATIVE KEY SYMBOL
2388 CONTROL KEY SYMBOL
2389 PAUSE KEY SYMBOL
238A BREAK SYMBOL
238B ESCAPE SYMBOL
238C UNDO SYMBOL
25F8 DECIMAL SEPARATOR FUNCTION SYMBOL
2614 PRINT SCREEN SYMBOL

Editorial comment:
The white space surrounding the centre line in the glyph for 2385 should be increased to show more separation between the brackets and the vertical bar (though the brackets should still form a notional square).

Attachment 3: UK

UK COMMENTS ACCOMPANYING VOTE OF APPROVAL ON ISO/IEC 10646-1-FPDAM/22 - (ISO/JTC1/SC2 N 3003)

-------

The UK approves FPDAM 22 with the following comments:

Technical comments.

Ten of the new symbols proposed are already available in ISO/IEC10646 First Edition if the characters in BMP Row 20 (Table 37, combining diacritical marks for symbols) are used in conjuction with existing symbols in other tables, as shown below.

Also 2387 RIGHTWARDS ARROW WITH SWITCH can be unified with the existing 2325 OPTION KEY.

There is thus no real need to add these eleven symbols, listed below, to 10646, unless the proposers have special reasons for wishing them to be distinct characters.

Clause 1.
