Abstract

Developing Multilingual Installation Programs Using InstallShield for Windows Installer

David Cole - IBM Corporation

Intended Audience: Software Engineer
Session Level: Intermediate

No matter how much time you've spent enabling and localizing your product for an international market, your customers' first experience will be with the product's installation. Moreover, the operating system requirements for installation have changed with the advent of Windows 2000 and the Windows Installer.

This paper and presentation describes how to design and develop multi-lingual software installation programs using InstallShield for Windows Installer. The topics addressed are,

  1. A background on Microsoft's Windows Installer service
  2. A description of the InstallShield for Windows Installer tool
  3. An example of a multi-lingual install program
  4. Details on how to design and develop a multi-lingual install
  5. Explanation of how and where Unicode is used in the process
  6. Hints, tips, and gotcha's

The paper, along with associated references, should be sufficient to enable the user to create his or her own multi-lingual software installation program.
