Gary Simons - SIL InternationalGary Simons is the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs at the international headquarters of SIL International in Dallas, Texas. Before that he was Director of SIL's Academic Computing Department (1984-1999). In that capacity he led a number of projects to develop software for field linguists. He has been active in the area of text markup, including helping to develop the Text Encoding Initiative's guidelines for text analysis and interpretation (1989-1994), serving on the TEI's Technical Review Committee (1996-1998), and serving on the editorial board of Markup Languages: Theory and Practice (1998-present). He received a Ph.D. in general linguistics (with minor emphases in computer science and classics) from Cornell University in 1979. |
