Abstract

Developing Desktop Publishing Software with Unicode

This paper will address issues presented by using Unicode as the internal encoding for a C/C++ Implementations of Desktop Publishing (DTP) software. The following issues will be examined from the point of view of DTP features:

  • selecting one or more Unicode encodings for internal use
  • dealing with combining characters and normalization
  • dealing with multilingual and multiscript text

The talk will give an overview of Unicode support available on Unix, Windows, and Macintosh for:

  • text layout and formatting
  • fonts and rendering
  • input methods
