With rapid internationalization, many new products are becoming available each
month from industry, academia, and governments in the U.S. and abroad. A key
problem among U.S. government language professionals, other government personnel
who use language tools, acquisitions officers, and planners is knowing what is
available or soon-to-be available from these sources, including patches and
updates that may significantly change the suitability of this software for U.S.
government use. A key problem in industry and academia in the U.S. and abroad
is that it is difficult to know who to talk with in the U.S. government about
language or language-capable products and it sometimes difficult to know the
capabilities that are important to this market. The United States Army Intelligence
Systems Command (USAINSCOM), which supports language professionals across the
government, and MITRE Corporation, a Federally Funded Research and Development
Center, are working on a database that would enable anyone on the internet to
view requirements per language technology and enter or update data about their
products. Because some of the information would be proprietary, the database will
be for U.S. government use only. This presentation shows the current prototype
and describes plans for the database. It also solicits input on datafields and
types of data collection that would best communicate government needs and represent
products.
