Unicode and other language-related standards often receive insufficient
explanation-or no explanation at all-in many university computer classes
or in technical accreditation classes. They of course receive much more
focus in programs related to language technology such as "Designing Systems
for Global Users" class that is part of American University's Masters of
Global Information Technology (MoGIT), or in Terminology Management and
Translation courses in programs like those at Kent State University.
However, relatively few students go into such programs, as there is little
awareness among undergraduates and graduates of the kinds of careers
available. This presentation focuses on: (1) what some programs are doing
to provide substantive education in Unicode and other language-related
standards; (2) what needs to be done or could be done to attract more
students to these kinds of programs; (3) how more of this kind of
curriculum could be introduced into mainstream computer courses and
accreditation classes.
