There is a plethora of Greek aphorisms around, but the keystone in Greek
thinking is the concept of freedom. Since freedom is what citizens of free
cities/states have, I would choose Hector's aphorism in Homer's Iliad:

"One omen is the best, to fight for one's country" (Loeb)
