In fraktur, I also have seen the umlaut depicted as a small "e" (lowecase),
positioned over lowecase a, o, u, and *inside* uppercase A, O, U.
This in quite common on shop signs in South Tirol (the German-speaking part
of Italy). I don't know how common it is in Austria or other countries.
