2) Does anyone know whether there exist versions of TeX which can handle
Unicode
fonts? I have not found TeX in the list of software products which support
Unicode. (TeX by PCTeX, Inc. is a software used for typesetting)
Thanks.

Magda.

Subject: Unicode and TeX; Order of "The Unicode Standard, Version 3.0"

Dear Sirs,

hora S.R.L. is a small company here in Sibiu. We have begun, in 1991, as a
desktop publishing firm; since 1997 we are also registered as a publishing
house.

For typesetting, we are using TeX exclusively, in the versions of PCTeX
Inc. who have their headquarters near to you, in Mill Valley, CA. When we
began in 1991, TeX was the only typesetting software which could represent
the special Roumanian characters; with some difficulties, that would have
been possible also with WordPerfect, but WordPerfect is practically unknown
here, and the very, very popular MS Word (DOS and Windows versions) ...
let's only say, that in the Word files of our clients we had to struggle
with more than 15 different encodings of Rounmanian letters, as Roumanian
is not supported in the normal TrueType font layout.

Last year, a former employee of ours who now lives in Canada, working in a
desktop publishing firm also there, gave us as a gift Robert Bringhurst's
"The Elements of Typographic Style" (Hartley & Marks, Publishers, 1997). In
that bokk, I read for the first time about Unicode. In the last days, I
studied your Web site, and I could imagine that using fonts which comply
with the Unicode standard would resolve most, when not all of our problems
in this domain (especially for linguistic texts overloaded with diacritics
the typesetting of which probably would have been impossible without TeX).

2) Do you know whether there exist versions of TeX which can handle Unicode
fonts? I have not found TeX in the list of software products which support
Unicode.

With thanks in advance for your cooperation, I am

Yours sincerly,

Wolfgang Hoppner.
