How about "connected"? It has exactly this meaning in mathematics.

Of course, it's glyphs that can be connected or not, not characters (if
you're using the Unicode meaning of the words). Considering the huge
variety of fonts out there, most characters can be shown either way
(although it would take a pretty weird font for some of them).

There is a (rare) variant glyph for xi that looks like a single jagged
line. You could also add a single vertical stoke through the three
horizontal ones, most people would still recognize it.
