Currently, the Mac (OS X) can read the glyph outlines, but can't read the
OpenType tables. Apple can comment on whether that will change in the
future.

Mind you, an application on the Mac can contain its own code to read and
process the OpenType tables. This is part of what CoolType does.

Without getting into technicalities, basically yes.
