Yes. Usually the mnemonic is the pronunciation. However, since many
characters share a pronunciation, it is necessary to display a little menu
to allow the user to choose the correct character from those with the given
pronunciation.
NOTE: Sometimes a character will have several pronunciations. In Japanese,
most characters have several pronunciations, depending on context. It is
not trivial to choose the correct pronunciation. (I sometimes laugh at the
attempts of kids.goo.ne.jp's automatic furiganizer, but it probably works
at least 90 percent of the time, I haven't checked much)
