One of the perpetual problems with language identification is that single
languages can have multiple names for which different portions of the
speaker community have different attitudes. A name that is politically
correct for one sub-community may be despised by another group within the
speaker community, and vice versa. These things cannot be said to be
absolute unless the entire speaker community in all locations is in
agreement.
What the facts are for Persian/Farsi, I don't know.
