I once had the doubtful joy of reading a Polish mathematics text (in
English) where the typesetter had not caught on to the fact that there is a
difference. Great fun.....
When font designers have trouble leaving enough clues to distinguish
between "1" and "l", there is no reason to believe they will distinguish
between "o" and a small Omicron.
Still, using this as an excuse to outlaw Omicron in identifiers is not
acceptable to the perceived user community.
